All in all, this is a book that's worth your time. The story is told as though it were an old time folktale, so you could look at it from that angle as well. Still, this is nice book to read if you want to learn about the gold rush and the fugitive slave act at the same time. After all, he was working a heinous variety of job. It turns out to be a happy story for all, even the slave catcher who I didn't think to root for. Together, they hatch a plan to buy the girl's mother back from the slave catcher by striking it rich by panning for gold. Demorest 30535 Georgia Freedom Hill ABOUT FREEDOM HILL Nestled in the rural mountain community of Demorest in northeast Georgia, Freedom Hill offers a faith-based residential recovery program for adult women struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. The two are friends and when a slave catcher catches the one's mother, she immediately seeks out the assistance of her friend. In this story, the two main characters are young girls in a gold rush town, one a free black being cared for by her runaway slave mother, the other girl being part of the only Jewish family in town. That book, titled The Price of Freedom: How One Town Stood Up to Slavery, took place in Ohio as opposed to this one in California, but the context was the same. That one ended differently, but this had its parallels. (It's currently in our K-6 library.) Have you used this book with kids? What age? What kind of discussions came out of it? I know these things happened, but I guess I just can't get over the tale-tellers speech, it seems to cheapen the story.Īs I read this, I was reminded of another story about a slave catcher and what people did to intervene on behalf of the slaves he caught. I'm curious if anyone else out there has misgivings about this book. In light of the terror that ICE agents are currently inflicting on CA (and other states) families of certain colors/place of origin, this could also be rather triggering for some children (when the slave catcher comes to take away the mother in the middle of working at the boarding house kitchen). This self-guided tour and map will cover the entire 2. And I doubt these two girls would be given a claim on their find-they are female, underage, and both of ethnicities that were widely discriminated against. The Freedom Trail at the center of historic Boston is a red brick path through the city leading visitors to many of the citys historic sites. Sure, there's a lot of "discussion starters" here, but I just dunno. I'm not even sure about some of the dialect and how to define what they are saying. And if this is supposed to be K-4, you will need to explain a lot of words in this text-heavy story, as well, of course the concepts of slavery, slave catchers and religious and ethnic bigotry. But it's written in an old-timey country vernacular-or what the author thinks is how they talked then. Beautiful illustrations and a sweet (sort of) story.
